Ayup! This one’s a response to the complete BS I recently had the displeasure of reading: An article (by Amateur Photographer) titled – These must-have iPhone accessories took my photography to the next level. Sigh.
Its sole purpose is to get you to click on their affiliate links. None of the products listed will help your photography at all. Is this really what it’s come to? Who’s actually falling for this nonsense? Show me how a Peak Design case improves your images.
The Real Must-Have Accessory
This all ties in nicely with a post I’ve been meaning to write anyway. The only iPhone photography accessory you need is you. Everything else is optional and generally a complete waste of time and money.
If the above post were a little more genuine, it would have included lenses, filters and tripods. At least they have a slight chance of adding something to your photos. Companies like Reeflex are popular and often talked about within the iPhone photography community.
That said, it’s an extremely niche market. How often do you see anyone with an external lens attached to their phone? I know I never have.
Missing the Point of iPhone Photography
Nobody uses their iPhone for photography because it produces the best quality images. While they’re adequate and constantly improving, it’s all about the convenience. It’s the camera that’s always with you.
Once you attach something like a comically large telephoto lens, all of this changes. It’s no longer able to fit in your pocket. You also need to faff about attaching/detatching it, and the phone becomes extremely top-heavy.
Just a personal opinion, but if you’re going to start buying £300+ external lenses for your iPhone, just get a camera.
To me, the joy of mobile photography is largely in its simplicity. Yes, I have a case attached. It does nothing more than help prevent you from dropping the phone when taking photos. Other than that, I like to keep things as uncomplicated as possible.
